2022 Annual Meeting
The Brennan Rehabilitation Foundation’s 2022 Board and Advisory Board meeting was held Sunday, February 20th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Michigan Shores Club in Wilmette , IL.
This event included a presentation by Monica A. Perez, PT, PhD. Dr. Perez received a Ph.D. in physical therapy from the University of Miami School of Medicine. She attended the University of Copenhagen as a post-doctoral fellow where she studied transmission in spinal cord networks. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Human Motor Human Cortical Physiology and Stroke Neurorehabilitation Section at the National Institutes of Health, where she focused on studies of cortical physiology and plasticity. Her main research interests are in understanding how the brain and spinal cord contribute to the control of voluntary movements in healthy humans and in individuals with spinal cord injury. She uses this mechanistic knowledge to develop rehabilitation therapies following CNS damage. Guests will be treated to an update on her research, and new therapies being utilized for cervical injuries.
We also announced our 2021 Socrates Award winners. The Socrates Awards were presented by Michael Calderon, Senior Vice President of The Big Ten Network in charge of Programming & Digital Media. Calderon has been at the forefront of guiding traditional sports media organizations through the Information Age. He joined Big Ten Network in February 2007 as its Director of New Media and was promoted in April 2010 to Vice President, Digital & Interactive Media. In July 2012, he added Programming to his list of responsibilities and in December of 2016, he was once again promoted to Senior Vice President, Programming and Digital Media. In his current role, Calderon manages all aspects of BTN’s programming and digital media strategies. On the programming front, this includes selecting and scheduling all games for telecast in addition to managing the football and basketball game selection process with CBS, ESPN and FOX Sports. He also oversees all network programming schedules as well as the BTN Originals team that is responsible for series such as The B1G Story, Campus Eats, The B1G Moment and the Emmy-nominated The Journey. Calderon has collaborated with the Big Ten Conference to implement an overhaul for how Olympic sports schedules are created in order to optimize the quality and maximize the quantity of Olympic sports events televised on BTN. In addition to increasing the number of televised events on BTN from 418 in 2011-12 to more than 550 today, the strategy has led to record ratings growth and increased exposure for several Olympic sports, most notably wrestling and women’s volleyball. Michael was one of the original producers of the Socrates Award.
